Paul Duchscherer

Paul Duchscherer (1952-2017), graduate ofthe Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design in 1975, lived and worked in San Francisco for over three decades. Paul specialized in period-style projects for historic buildings, extending from all aspects of interiors to many design issues concerning building exteriors, ranging from style-appropriate color schemes to garden and landscape design concepts, to expert advice and guidance for proposed old-house remodels and additions, as well as for all-new construction projects in period styles.  Examples of his work have been widely published in periodicals and books. An avid proponent of historic preservation, his professional activities included lecturing, writing, and teaching about historic design. Paul’s expertise led to frequent appearances on various television programs, including the PBS series “This Old House,” and the HGTV series “Curb Appeal.” In collaboration with noted architectural photographer Douglas Keister, Paul authored numerous books, including The Bungalow: America’s Arts & Crafts Home (1995), Inside the Bungalow: America’s Arts & Crafts Interior (1997), Outside the Bungalow: America’s Arts & Crafts Garden (1999), and Victorian Glory in San Francisco and the Bay Area (2001), all published by Penguin Putnam Inc., and a series of small-format books called Bungalow Basics (2003-2004), published by Pomegranate. Paul’s two most recent books, Beyond the Bungalow: Grand Homes in the Arts & Crafts Tradition (2005) and Along Bungalow Lines: Creating an Arts & Crafts Home (2006), were both collaborations with photographer Linda Svendsen, and published by Gibbs Smith.
